30 Jul Rose Bourassa Guest Speaker at Chamber Breakfast
The La Mirada Chamber continues its speaker series on August 1st at 8:00 AM at 12 Sixty Modern Pub & Kitchen in La Mirada located at 14299 Firestone Blvd, La Mirada, CA 90638.
We are honored to have Rose Bourassa as our guest speaker, event lead for La Mirada/Whittier Relay4Life.
Message from Rose Bourassa:
Cancer does not discriminate. It affects everyone. This is why I got involved, to make a difference for people living with cancer.
In May 1985, in order to help make a difference for his patients and the American Cancer Society, Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington.
Klatt spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track raising $27,000. He thought if just one person can raise thousands of dollars then what could a thousand people do? This is how Relay For Life was born.
After battling stomach cancer, Klatt passed away from heart failure on August 3, 2014 at the age of 71. But his legacy lives on. He shaped an idea to raise money that turned into the largest all volunteer fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, helping to fund 3.1 billion for cancer research.
La Mirada Relay for Life came into being in 2004. In 2018, Whittier joined the La Mirada Relay to become the fundraising entity everyone knows today. This year La Mirada/Whittier will carry on the tradition on September 30, 2023, at Splash Aquatic Park in La Mirada, with teams lining the walking path Celebrating Cancer Survivors, raising money to fund more cancer research projects, and remember those we lost.
Everyone is invited to join in the celebration starting with our opening ceremony at 9:00 a.m., followed by our Survivors taking their Victory Lap.
I hope you can attend and support the teams that line the walking track. There will be homemade goods galore, opportunity drawings, live entertainment on the stage, great food, and drinks.
The day will conclude with the ever-heart-warming Luminaria ceremony, slide show, and memorial lap. If you have never participated in the Luminaria lap, please make plans to participate. You will not regret it.
Every dollar raised at Relay goes directly to the American Cancer Society research programs, patient’s services, and community education material.
It is the mission of the American Cancer Society to end this disease as we know it.
For those of us who love to eat, 12Sixty and The Holiday Inn are offering an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet at a heavily discounted rate of $18/per person + tax and tip. Please join us early to get a seat in the Chamber’s reserved section.
